The Operations Deparment first and foremost, is a cohesive functioning faculty group who share a common vision about the mission and future of the Area, who work cooperatively to achieve common goals, and who value the collegiality within the Department.
The Operations faculty are leading experts in their areas of research having published in journals including: Management Science, Operations Research, MSOM, POMS, IIE and Decision Science. Their research has been recognized at national and international levels. Professor Swaminathan's research has been recognized with several national and international awards including - CAREER Award, George Nicholson Prize and George Dantzig Best Dissertation Prize.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the journal Management Science the membership of INFORMS selected Professor Harvey Wagner's 1958 article Dynamic Version of the Economic Lot Size Model, coauthored with Thomas Whitin, as one of its ten most influential published papers.
The Operations Department faculty are renowned for their teaching and are often recognized by students as the top educators in the school. Professor Douglas Elvers was awarded the 2000 Tanner Faculty Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. The award recognizes excellence in inspirational teaching of undergraduate students.
In 2003 Associate Professor Wendell Gilland was honored with the Weatherspoon Award for Excellence in MBA teaching. And, In 2006 Professor and Chair Jay Swaminathan received the Weatherspoon Award for Excellence in PhD teaching. Professor Ann Marucheck has been awarded the Weatherspoon Award for Excellence in Ph.D. teaching in 1986, 1991, 2000 and 2010.
Professor Swaminathan served as the Vice President of MSOM society in 2003 - 04 and Associate Dean of Kenan Flagler Business School from 2008 - 2011.
In addition our faculty serve as editors and members of editorial boards of prominent journals such as Management Science, MSOM, POMS, IIE, Operations Research, Naval Research Logistics and IEEE.
