The Investment Management Concentration
Events
On November 9, 2007, Kenan-Flagler will host the third Alpha Challenge. Our first Alpha Challenge took place on November 11, 2005, when Kenan-Flagler Business School hosted the premier MBA event in the Investment Management industry. The Alpha Challenge invited teams from MBA programs around the country to compete against one another in a stock pitch competition focused around popular hedge fund trading strategies.
The UNC Kenan-Flagler’s team won the first annual Evergreen Investments Alpha Challenge [read the media release].
Overview
The concentration in Investment Management (IM) is designed to prepare students for leadership positions on both the buy and sell sides of securities markets, including:
Security analysis and portfolio management
Capital markets
Sales and trading
Personal client services
The required curriculum includes both a rigorous theoretical component and a demanding applied component. Courses are structured to provide students a nearly comprehensive preparation for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program. Most IM concentrators choose the Applied Investment Management (AIM) course in which students manage real portfolios of financial assets. Historically, Kenan-Flagler has placed about 10 percent of the graduating class in positions involving investment management. The school has alumni in all global financial centers and most major financial corporations.
Applied Investment Management
Students may apply to the student managed funds (779, Applied Investment Management) course at the beginning of Mod III in the first year. This course begins in Mod IV of the first year and extends through all four mods of the second year. Students may also receive course credit for undertaking an approved practicum. Practicums are initiated by students and pre-approved by the concentration coordinator. (See MBA Handbook for details on practica study) A typical practicum will include working at least 60 hours (1 full day per week during a module) at a financial services company and completing an original research project.
In addition to the core courses required of all students, IM students must complete the following course or otherwise demonstrate proficiency of the covered material: See Custom Core & Finance and Accounting Courses.
