John J. Sumanth

 

Biography:

John Sumanth is a 4th year Ph.D. Candidate in Organizational Behavior at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Kenan-Flagler Business School.  For his dissertation, he is exploring how managers can influence lower-status employees to speak up about concerns or ideas they have by framing issues in such a way that creates "issue-specific psychological safety" for the person voicing.  In addition, his parallel stream of research examines how interpersonal trust and status perceptions can shape individual-, team- and organizational-level outcomes.  His co-authored paper with Adam Grant, exploring the critical role trustworthy managers play in improving prosocially motivated employees' performance, was recently published in the Journal of Applied Psychology(2009).  John serves as an ad hoc reviewer for Human Resource Management, Human Resource Management Review, Journal of Management Inquiryand the Academy of Management's annual conferences.  He was recently awarded a 2009 Outstanding Reviewer Award by the Academy of Management's OB Division.  He is a member of the Academy of Management's OB and SIM Divisions and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. In addition, he has presented his work at the annual Academy of Management meetings, INFORMS, and the International Conference on Productivity and Quality Research (ICPQR). 

 

John received his B.S. in Industrial Engineering, cum laude, from the University of Miami and an MBA in Marketing and Management from the University of Florida.  Prior to pursuing his Ph.D., John spent over seven years working in the cruise tourism and food and beverage industries in a variety of high profile strategic planning, marketing research, and R&D roles.
