Tax Center

Accounting professors at UNC Kenan-Flagler:

  • Specialize in corporate and other business taxes, both domestically and internationally
  • Publish extensively in the leading scholarly journals
  • Play an important role in federal and state tax policy, including Congressional testimony, conferences, and numerous policy-motivated research studies
  • Teach income taxation and accounting for income taxes in the School’s acclaimed MBA and Master of Accounting programs
  • Foster close relationships tax practitioners and graduates of UNC Kenan-Flagler’s MBA and MAC programs, who hold leading tax positions in accounting firms and corporations throughout the United States

They also have a tradition of expertise in tax scholarship, policy and practice.
UNC Kenan-Flagler established the UNC Tax Center to build bridges between tax scholars, policymakers and practitioners. Although interested in similar issues, the three groups typically have limited contact with each other. The UNC Tax Center has increased their interactions through such events as its annual tax symposium in Chapel Hill as well as joint conferences with the Brookings Institution, American Tax Policy Institute, National Bureau of Economics Research and National Tax Association.
Increasing the visibility and contribution of accountants in tax policymaking is another goal of the UNC Tax Center. Typically economists have framed policy issues and lawyers have drafted legislation. Despite their central role in the administration and behavioral responses to tax policy, accountants have played a very limited role in policymaking. With its roots in the accounting area of a business school, the UNC Tax Center is designed to improve policy through active involvement by accountants, both academic and practitioners.
The center is open to new ventures that involve important business issues in which taxes play a critical role. Private donations, contract research and corporate sponsors provide the center’s revenues.
